Choosing an e-commerce platform is one of those decisions that is painful to reverse. Migrating 500 products, rebuilding integrations, and retraining staff costs more than getting it right the first time.

Shopify — best for speed and simplicity
Choose Shopify if: you want to launch in weeks, sell standard products (physical or digital), and prefer paying monthly instead of managing servers.

- Huge app ecosystem for shipping, email, reviews, upsells
- Reliable checkout — Shopify's conversion rate is hard to beat on shared hosting
- Good for fashion, beauty, supplements, and general retail
Watch out for: monthly fees ($39–$399+) plus transaction fees if you skip Shopify Payments. Heavy customisation hits theme limits. Pakistan payment gateways require third-party apps or workarounds.
WooCommerce — best for WordPress owners who want control
Choose WooCommerce if: you already run WordPress, need deep SEO control, or want to avoid platform lock-in.
- No platform transaction fees — you pay hosting + payment gateway only
- Thousands of plugins for anything WordPress can do (blogs, memberships, bookings)
- Full access to code and database — you own everything
- Works well for content-heavy stores (recipe kits, B2B catalogues, local brands with storytelling)
Watch out for: you are responsible for hosting speed, security updates, and plugin conflicts. A slow WooCommerce site on cheap hosting loses sales fast. Budget for maintenance — not just launch.
Custom build — best for unique workflows
Choose custom if: your business model does not fit a product catalogue — subscriptions with complex rules, multi-vendor marketplaces, B2B quoting, ERP integration, or apps that share a backend with a web store.

- Exact fit for your workflow — no plugin workarounds
- Performance tuned to your catalogue size and traffic
- Integrates with internal systems (inventory, CRM, accounting)
Watch out for: higher upfront cost ($15,000–$60,000+ depending on scope), longer timeline, and you need a team for ongoing development. Only worth it when platforms genuinely cannot do what you need.
If Shopify or WooCommerce can handle 80% of your requirements with plugins, use them. Custom is for the other 20% that would break a standard store.

What about Pakistan-specific payments?
JazzCash, EasyPaisa, and local bank gateways matter here. Shopify supports some via apps; WooCommerce has local gateway plugins; custom builds integrate directly. Always test checkout on a real phone with a real payment before launch — this is where most Pakistan stores fail.
